Documentary Shorts Kieslowski
Four early short documentaries by Kieślowski, from pitch-black hospital humour to ballerinas of all ages: with Bricklayer, From a Night Porter’s Point of View, Hospital and Seven Women of Different Ages. Introuduced byexpert Benjamin Gijzel, Kieślowski’s regular translator and interpreter.

Programme
Bricklayer (Krzysztof Kieslowski, PL 1973, 18')
A bricklayer remembers how, as an activist during the Stalinist era in the mid-’50s, he was encouraged by the Party to become a model worker (Stakhanovite) and to switch to an office job.
From a Night Porter's Point of View (Krzysztof Kieslowski, PL 1978, 17')
Portrait of a factory porter who adheres fanatically to strict discipline; a man with fascistic views balancing on the edge. His extremism even permeates his personal life: he tries to control everyone and everything in the conviction that rules are more important than people.
Hospital (Krzysztof Kieslowski, PL 1977, 20')
Kieślowski spent 24 hours filming in the accident & emergency department of a Polish hospital, which we see through the eyes of the (smoking) doctors; from the first briefing to the end of the shift. Kieślowski records the everyday, endless hospital work with a bone-dry sense of black humour.
Seven Women of Different Ages (Krzysztof Kieslowski, PL 1979, 16')
Subtle portraits of seven dancers spread across the days of the week – from the youngest child making her first ballet steps to the oldest ballerina now working as a ballet teacher.
