Drømmer

Dag Johan Haugerud / NO, 2024 / 111 min.

Johanne's diary dealing with her first love sends shock waves through her family, prompting both her mother and her grandmother to look closely at their own love lives. Sensitive, witty, astute winner of a Golden Bear in Berlin.

As she turns seventeen, Johanne falls head-over-heels in love with her (female) teacher. She commits her feelings – from heady excitement and elation to confusion and frustration – to her diary. When her mother and grandmother come across her writings, at first they are shocked by their raw honesty; but they soon also see literary potential in the work. The two older women begin to re-examine their own romantic lives – the pleasures savoured and the opportunities passed by – and recall the all-encompassing passion of their own first loves.

Prelude

Before Drømmer, you'll see Britt Planken's short film Homecoming (2 minutes) from 2024. In this short animation, we follow a conversation with several people who identify as queer and feel connected to the LGBTQ+ community. Together, these personal interviews touch on a larger question: what exactly is queer happiness?
