Drylongso
Cauleen Smith / US, 1998 / 81 min.
Rediscovered highlight of the 1990s DIY film scene is a lovingly made buddy film/murder mystery/romance. A woman starts photographing young African-American males in her neighbourhood as part of a photography course in Oakland. New 4K restoration.

Art student Pica (Toby Smith) from Oakland observes how young Afro-American men around her are senselessly murdered in droves – ‘go extinct’ as she puts it and tries to record their lives in Polaroids. In the meantime, she befriends a woman trapped in a violent relationship as well as becoming involved in the hunt for a serial killer on the loose in the city. The ‘Westside Slasher’ has killed people in her neighbourhood including some of the young men she took photos of.
