Een avond met Cocaïne
The Dutch literary magazine De Gids and EYE are reissuing Cocaïne, a novel by Dutch actor Coen Hissink who lived in Berlin in the 1920s. On the occasion of this special book launch EYE will screen films from its collection starring Hissink. Director Frans Weisz offers commentary, while writer H.M. van den Brink talks about Hissink’s life.

Dutch actor Coen Hissink (1878-1942) starred in numerous Dutch and German films. He also wrote Cocaïne: Berlijnsch zedenbeeld (Cocaine: a Berlin Moral Drama), a melodramatic novel describing his work for Berlin”s JoFa film studios and the night life in clubs and brothels on Kurfürstendamm. A white haze of cocaine, the fashionable drug in artistic and elite circles, hangs over both.
The editorial board of De Gids literary magazine decided on a unique reissue of Hissink”s work. The novel is preceded by a new introduction and is only available for visitors during this special evening in EYE, when fragments will also be screened of 1920s Berlin and films starring Coen Hissink.
Included in the programme are the silent films Jagd auf Dich, Menschenwee and Man zonder Hart. Director Frans Weisz comments on the fragments and writer H.M. van den Brink talks about Hissink”s life. Hissink was a dedicated communist who died in Neuengamme concentration camp in 1942. With live musical accompaniment by Sara Zamboni.
Admission € 20,00 (including a copy of the book): € 10,00 (excluding the book). A limited number of seats are available via EYE; see www.de-gids.nl/gidscahier.
