Ruiz time regained

Een zomeravond met Proust

Madeleine biscuits, lime blossom tea and the shifting perception of time: a long summer evening in EYE is devoted to the search of lost time with Proust to celebrate the launch of a new Dutch translation of Du coté de chez Swann (Swann’s Way) and a volume of radio lectures, A summer with Proust.

The evening”s programme includes two magnificent screen adaptations of Proust, a short talk by Proust translator Rokus Hofstede and a discussion with Maartje de Kort, who translated the radio lectures. The evening kicks off with Monty Python”s hilarious Summary Proust Competition sketch. In collaboration with Athenaeum publishers

Le temps retrouvé (Time Regained)Raúl Ruiz FR, 1999, 169 min. Language: French; Subtitles: DutchLast part of the vast cycle of novels À la recherche du temps perdu (In search of lost time) by Marcel Proust (1871-1922). On his deathbed the narrator recalls memories of his youth, past loves and the First World War. His recollections are not chronological but shift back and forth in time. With a stellar cast including Catherine Deneuve, Emanuelle Béart and John Malkovich.

Un amour de Swann (Swann in Love)Volker Schlöndorff FR/FRG, 1984, 110 min. Language: French; Subtitles: DutchIt defeated both Joseph Losey and Luchino Visconti: adapting Marcel Proust”s seven-volume novel cycle À la recherche du temps perdu (“In search of lost time”). Not so Volker Schlöndorff (Die Blechtrommel), who hired Jean-Claude Carrière as the screenwriter for his adaptation of Un amour de Swann, the second section of “Swann”s Way”. In this tale of obsessive love, the elegant and affluent Swann (Jeremy Irons) falls for a courtesan with a common touch (Ornella Muti) and Alain Delon shines as the decadent, homosexual baron de Charlus. The camera work is by Sven Nykvist, who earlier achieved fame as Ingmar Bergman”s cameraman.

This film is introduced by Proust translator Rokus Hofstede
