Egomania - Insel ohne Hoffnung
Christoph Schlingensief / DEUZE, 1986 / 87 min.
Schlingensief created Egomania, a post-apocalyptic romantic symphony on loss especially for Tilda Swinton. Featuring Udo Kier as a vampire baron who rules the small, snowy German island of Egomania, a land without hope.

Christoph Schlingensief often created purposely anti-aesthetic, offensive films, but Egomania is conspicuous for its unexpectedly beautiful mythological scenes and characters. This idiosyncratic film depicts the struggle between creative and destructive forces on a Baltic island where no peace nor joy can be found, just strife and hopelessness. When true love seems to reach the island, the vampire baron Tante Teufel, who rules the island’s inhabitants, panics.

Pre-film
Before Egomania - Insel ohne Hoffnung, you’ll see 'Bits & Pieces 218' (5’) with a new film score by Thijs Havens (Eye), a fragment of an unidentified film from the Eye archives, with beautiful close-ups of a starfish. Tilda Swinton hand-picked a short film, either from her rich oeuvre or from Eye’s collection, to precede all feature films.
