Eline Vere
Harry Kümel / NL, BE, FR, 1991 / 132 min.
After director Harry Kümel talked to Matthijs van Heijingen a long-held wish was fulfilled: the adaptation of Dutch author Louis Couperus’ ‘Eline Vere’. About a young woman who wants to spread her wings, far away from the restrained bourgeoisie of The Hague.

Eline Vere is young, beautiful, artistically and musically gifted. None of her talents are appreciated by her restrained upper class, fin-de-siècle milieu. On the contrary, Eline is made to perform socially in order to find the ‘right match’ to marry.
