EYE in het Muziekgebouw - Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari
Robert Wiene / DEUZE, 1920 / 80 min.
Robert Wiene’s German horror film tells the story of the hypnotist Dr. Caligari, who is involved together with his assistant Cesare in a series of murders committed in the gloomy village of Holstenwall. The film is told in flashbacks by Francis, who went on a visit to the mountain village. When his friend dies suddenly, he becomes suspicious and starts investigating.

Expressionism made a striking entry in the world of film with its stylized visuals and intensely physical acting performances. New European Ensemble, a music group from The Hague, performs the score for this evening”s film. They selected from the works of Salvatore Sciarrino, Luca Francesconi and Tristan Murail, whose compositions resonate with the film”s eerie character.
