Fårö-Dokument 1970
Ingmar Bergman / SE, 1970 / 59 min.
Ingmar Bergman interviews the local population on the Swedish island of Fårö, which he loved very much, spent a long time living and shot several of his most famous films. A generation gap becomes apparent on the remote island.

Ingmar Bergman discovered the grim, windswept island of Fårö in 1960, whilst scouting for locations for Through a Glass Darkly. Almost a decade later, the director wished to create an homage to the island’s inhabitants. In Fårö-Dokument, shot using a handheld 16mm camera by Sven Nykvist, Bergman interviews all sorts of locals whilst exposing the generation gap between the young inhabitants desperate to leave and the older islanders who are steeped in island traditions. The film reveals that Bergman was also a sensitive, masterful documentarian.
