Journalist and tonight’s moderator Guus Schulting (Filmkrant) will discuss the work of Felix de Rooy with Charl Landvreugd (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam). Felix de Rooy (1952) is a filmmaker from Curaçao as well as an actor, artist, theatre maker and collector. Many young Dutch and Caribbean makers view him as an important source of inspiration.

Felix de Rooy– APOCALYPSE

From 22 April until 3 September 2023, Stedelijk Museum presents five decades of artistry by the multi-talented Felix de Rooy, with film, theatre and visual art in myriad forms, from paintings and assemblages to (digital) collages and wall hangings. Far ahead of his time, De Rooy explored topics that remain relevant today, such as the continuing negative legacy of colonialism, everyday racism and the meaning of Afro-Caribbean and queer identities in art.

Programme

  • Running 8/45 (Germaine Binstead, 1970, 10')

In the short film Running 8/45, filmmaker Felix de Rooy runs through parks, woodlands, dunes to ultimately kneel on the beach near a flower. Screening of the 16mm from Eye’s collection.

  • Muhe Frida (Felix de Rooy, 2011, 17')

A contemporary art film, which expresses 7 different alter egos of Frida Kahlo, revealing her strength, power and agonies. Each scenario represents a different concept, written and directed by De Rooy. Alydia Wever portrays Frida Kahlo.

  • The Renny Show (Felix de Rooy, 2015, 19')

Short drama in which an eccentric TV personality concludes his career in suitable fashion with a farewell party. All the masked guests are apparitions from his notorious, troubledpast.
