Flight

Robert Zemeckis / US, 2012 / 138 min.

Denzel Washington kicked his squeaky clean image tot he curb as an addled pilot whose heroic emergency landing brings his drug and alcohol addiction to light. Impressive actor’s film in which Washington’s acting also reaches great heights.

The opening scene is no reassurance to those with a fear of flying: airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) wakes up in a hotel room, sucks on the joint his bed mate proffers, takes a quick line of coke, then puts on his uniform and heads to work. No surprise then that the day’s flight, from Miami to Atlanta doesn’t go precisely according to plan – he added vodka to his gravy. After a technical issue he still manages to land spectacularly in a Georgia cornfield.
