In Floating Clouds, Naruse contrasts a tempestuous wartime love affair with the post-war reality of Tokyo, a city in ruins. When Yukiko returns from French Indochina expecting to resume her relationship with Tomioka, she”s in for an unpleasant surprise: the stoical young man prefers to lead a quiet life with his ailing wife. Yukiko”s attempts to win back her lover cause an irreparable rift between the two.

Naruse”s portrait of two ex-lovers struggling to cope in a ruined city, reminded one film critic of Fassbinder”s early work. In these films of Fassbinder, a whole generation of survivors is looking for something to hold on to, while the female characters show greater courage than the men who lost the war.
