Fred Kelemen – Cinematograaf van Béla Tarr – Artists Talk + vertoning Verhängnis

In his films Béla Tarr uses extremely long shots in which the camera ‘explores’ a space or a landscape very slowly. Tarr’s regular cameraman, Fred Kelemen, talks with Ludmila Cvikova about his collaboration with the Hungarian director and presents fragments from his work.

Fred Kelemen was Director of Photography for The Turin Horse, Journey to the Plain, The Man from London, and Béla Tarr”s last scene Muhamed (2017), which is screened at the exhibition Béla Tarr – Till the End of the World.

After the talk with Kelemen EYE will screen Verhängnis (1994).

verhängnis

Kelemen exposes the rough edges of modern urban life. A city populated by illegal migrants and prostitutes. An uprooted Russian accordion player and a man from South America drift through the Berlin night. The Russian shoots his girlfriend”s lover after having been humiliated by the South American. In his graduation film, director Fred Kelemen presents a compelling portrait of the Russian exile”s fear and desperation.

In the course of a single night the paths cross of these several characters, who speak different languages but are united by their lonely quest for happiness and their hopeless state of being. Every gesture of affection turns into an act of humiliation.
