Free Radicals - A History of Experimental Film
Pip Chodorov / FR, 2010 / 83 min.
Pip Chodorov, who grew up in the New York experimental filmmakers milieu in the sixties, takes us through the history of the ‘Free Radicals’: makers who approached film as if it were a new artform. A unique journey through the history of the (American) avant-garde.
They were regular visitors to his parents’ home: Jonas Mekas, Stan Brakhage and other leading lights of the New York and international underground. In the sixties and seventies, artists and filmmakers who demanded more from film than a rounded, dramaturgically tied-up narrative with an emotionally satisfying catharsis, started to stir.
