Gabriel Lester: Artist Talk
The visual artist Gabriel Lester, whose work is currently featured in an exhibition in De Appel Arts Centre, shows some of his own work, talks about his research and how his artworks have developed. Lester’s The Last Smoking Flight is also screened.

From 25 June to 2 October 2016 the Dutch artist Gabriel Lester is creating an exhibition in De Appel under the title Appel Z.
Lester on Appel Z: “Recently I was listening to a radio interview. They were talking about this book, and at one point the journalist said the book had 350 pages, though the actual story only ran to 275 pages. I”m not sure I quite understood what was meant, but my imagination ran away with me.
What were those remaining 75 pages about? Did they describe life as it went on before and after the story? Passing footsteps in the hall? Doors opening and shutting? The fluctuations in temperature and air humidity? Echoes? Shadows? Moods? It struck me as the most poetic and enchanting volume: all that remains after the stories have been told – because what went on before the cosmos and what will go on after it, isn”t that the most infinite of stories?
The exhibition I”m currently developing deals with the unsolved, and with that which happened, and then refused to “un-happen”. From our daily interventions to “undo” something on the computer to our longing to undo our fate and our destiny or start all over again.”
