Rumble Fish (Francis Ford Coppola, US 1983, 94')

Following trailers for gang films including West Side Story and Colors, we will be screening Rumble Fish, Francis Ford Coppola's highly personal story of alienation and reconciliation between two rebellious brothers set in a dreamy, timeless Tulsa. The impressive black-and-white style of this 'art film for teens' harks back to German expressionism. The powerful percussion provided by Stewart Copeland on the soundtrack underlines the film’s romantic fatalism, with memorable roles for Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, Dennis Hopper, Nicolas Cage, Chris Penn, Tom Waits and Laurence Fishburne.

Cry-Baby (John Waters, US 1990, 85')

Following trailers for films such as The Wanderers and The Yakuza, we turn up the heat even more with John Waters' hilarious, hysterical musical comedy Cry-Baby. Johnny Depp is supercool as irresistible bad guy Wade ‘Cry-Baby’ Walker, who has all the girls at his high school drooling over him with his astonishing talent for letting out a single tear. Depp enacts a pastiche of juvenile delinquents of the ’50s, complete with leather jacket, swept-back hair, motorcycle and predilection for 'good girls' he can corrupt. John Waters, an independent cult film pioneer, again slathers his transgressive cinema in a generous helping of happiness, while elevating bad taste to an artform.

About Eye

Tonight, Night of the Flies, an hour of flies and a feature film about a fly Eega: an action extravaganza, song and dances, outrageous humour and a love story about a poverty stricken beggar who reincarnates as a house fly.

Flies prove unexpectedly cinematically appealing and have inspired many filmmakers. We will start the evening with excerpts from films including: The Fly (1958), Return of the Fly (1959), Curse of the Fly (1965), Once Upon a Time in the West and the scene in Abel in which Abel tries to cut a fly in half. Then we will fly on to Eega (India, 2012).
In this Indian extravaganza, a murdered beggar reincarnates as a fly after which he plans to get his revenge on his murderer. Eega (Hindi for ‘fly’) director S.S. Rajamouli put a hilarious twist on the age old David Vs. Goliath story. In this romantic fantasy-comedy the ultimate winged underdog battles the ultimate evil. There prove to be 1,001 ways a fly can make a human life hard.

Night of the Flies

During spring break, Koolhoven & Simons present a special youth creepy edition of their programme, kicking off with trailers from great scary movies such as Vampire in Brooklyn, Teen Wolf and Beetle Juice, followed by the main feature Arachnophobia.

Scared of spiders? In Arachnophobia, luckily there are also plenty of laughs, and no real horror. In the style of entertaining early B movies, Arachnophobia ('fear of spiders') treats us to brilliant acting from Jeff Daniels and John Goodman, who end up in a creepy-comical adventure with arachnids.
Jerry Manley travels to a remote sinkhole in the Amazon rainforest to help Dr. Atherton’s research expedition. Upon returning to camp, an unlucky cameraman is bitten by a deadly poisonous spider, who then hitches a ride to the US in his coffin... 
Spider-cam-images give a spine-tingling impression of the spread of the spiders through the American suburbs, sharply directed by Marshall, who previously produced adventure classics such as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Poltergeist and Gremlins. Gruesomely great!

How often do you still get the chance to see Bad Lieutenant (1992), Young Frankenstein (1974) or Darkman (1990) on the big screen at your favourite cinema? Rarely or never, as even the most hardcore film buff will have to admit. That’s why it’s a good thing to have filmmaker and VPRO presenter Martin Koolhoven and Eye programmer Ronald Simons, film specialists out of cinephile necessity, join forces.
