Amsterdam Art Week: Mohamed Bourouissa
A special Amsterdam Art Week screening
Mohamed Bourouissa describes contemporary society implicitly, by its contours. With a critical take on the mass media image, the subjects of his photographs and videos are people left behind at the crossroads of integration and exclusion. Especially relevant during the current volatile political landscape, he is able to takes us to a space that addresses the structural by showing the personal.

In Genealogy of Violence Mohamed Bourouissa shows us how casual encounters make for everyday politics and experiences of exclusion. Moreso, he makes us aware of how quickly situations can escalate and prospects can change.
Born in 1978 in Blida (AL), Bourouissa lives and works in Paris (FR). In his short films he connects an insight in the intimacy of a relationship and formulated hopes, with the reality of societal structures and how seemingly small acts have large effects on entire lives.
The screening includes Bourouissa’s most recent film Genealogy of Violence (2024) as well as earlier works; and will be accompanied with an introduction by Beatrix Ruf, director of Hartwig Art Foundation and a conversation between Humie Pourseyf (Programmer of the Future, Eye) and Amsterdam-based artist Gilleam Trapenberg.
AAW attendees can take advantage of the special film-menu prior to this screening; a simple and relatively quick meal at a reduced rate. Upon presentation of entrance ticket.
