Ghost in the Shell
Mamoru Oshii / GB, JP, 1995 / 83 min.
Tokyo, 2029: the cyborgs are among us, in the lovely shape of Major Motoko Kusanagi. Motoko is a cop in Public Security 9 who is sent after the notorious Puppet Master. Director Mamoru Oshii set a new standard in the field of SF anime. Not the action but philosophical questions regarding identity in the age of electronic networks sets the tone.

On November 8, the film is preceded by the film lecture Woman-Machine: Gender and Technology in Japanese Anime (English). From cyborg women to mutant boys and monster girls: anime radically shifts the boundaries of gender. Dr. Amir Vodka is a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam's Media Studies department.
