Girlfriend
Tracy Choi / , 2025 / 100 min.
In a reverse coming-of-age journey across time and place, a struggling filmmaker confronts the shifting phases, identities, and unresolved relationships of her youth to make sense of the person she has become.

Lok, a filmmaker in her 30s, is struggling to sustain her career in Hong Kong, while her girlfriend wishes for stability. Crushed by the pressure and creative burnout, Lok once again finds herself torn between the remarkable life that she dreams of and her ordinary reality. Disillusioned, she begins to revisit different versions of herself—each with its own partner, tensions, and unresolved desires.
Told in reverse chronology, the film traces Lok’s journey from her restless life as an angsty twenty-something fresh graduate in Taiwan, back to her bright-eyed teenage years in Macau, where she grapples with university choices and early moments of self-discovery. Through these fragments, Lok seeks to make sense of the person she has become.
Led by an ensemble cast of some of Hong Kong’s most sought-after actors, Girlfriends is a tender ode to youth and becoming—an unflinching, painfully realistic reflection on the lives we inhabit in order to become who we are.
