Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

Stanley Kramer / US, 1967 / 108 min.

Ground-breaking film about a family shaken to its core in the 1960s when the daughter brings a black boyfriend (Sidney Poitier) home for dinner. This classic is also the last joint performance by legendary film couple Hepburn-Tracy, as bewildered parents forced to confront their prejudices when meeting their prospective in-laws.

Joanna returns home with her new fiancé, Doctor John Prentice (Sidney Poitier), without telling her parents that he’s black. Mother Christina (Katharine Hepburn) accepts her daughter’s decision to marry John, but father Matthew (Spencer Tracy) is shocked by this interracial romance. John’s parents are also bewildered. Both families are forced to sit down together and probe one another’s prejudices. What starts out as a festive day turns into an evening of heated discussions and concern about the couple’s problematic future.
