Hard Boiled
John Woo / HK, 1992 / 128 min.
John Woo’s masterpiece persists in being seen as one of the best action films of all time. A dizzying odyssey through the world of the Hong Kong Triads, under-cover officers and ultra-stylized slow-motion chaos. Screens in a brand new 4K restored version.

Hard Boiled is the culmination of John Woo’s ‘heroic bloodshed’ period. This sub-genre of ultra-stylised, raw, emotional Hong Kong action films is a combination of ballet-like gun battles and melodrama – a style imitated by many other filmmakers for decades. For Hard Boiled, Woo cast the ever-charismatic Chow Yun-fat as disillusioned detective ‘Tequila’ Yuen. The iconic Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (In The Mood For Love) plays Alan, an undercover officer who folds a little origami bird every time he kills someone.
Screens in a 4K-restored version. Eye is also showing John Woo's American action thriller Face/Off, with Nicolas Cage and John Travolta.
