Het jaar van de kreeft
Herbert Curiël / NL, 1975 / 91 min.
The debut fiction feature by recently deceased director Herbert Curiël brought together Dutch stars Willeke van Ammelrooy and Rutger Hauer on the big screen for the first time. This adaptation of Hugo Claus’ infamous novel of the same title deals with a passionate, but doomed, love affair.

According to newspaper De Telegraaf, Hugo Claus’ novel Het jaar van de kreeft (The Year of the Cancer, 1972) was ‘scandalous’: a barely disguised settling of scores by author Hugo Claus with his former lover, actress Kitty Courbois.
