Hitchcock/Truffaut

Kent Jones / FR, US, 2015 / 80 min.

In 1962 François Truffaut spent a week interviewing the unrivalled master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. The sessions resulted in Hitchcock/Truffaut, the classic book which is still regarded as the bible for aspiring filmmakers. Film expert Kent Jones talked to contemporary filmmakers, including Richard Linklater, Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson, about this seminal work.

Half a century after the publication of Hitchcock/Truffaut (1967), the book which is hailed as a sort of Film Academy all on its own , Jones, Artistic Director of the New York Film Festival, went to interview a number of modern directors. Together with the French critic and historian Serge Toubiana, he selected pivotal passages from Hitchcock/Truffaut and used them as starting points for his own interviews. How has Hitchcock”s thesis of “Pure Cinema” influenced the works of filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson or Olivier Assyas? Classics like The Birds, Psycho and Rear Window are discussed, David Fincher eloquently explains that Hitchcock had this special talent of being able to visually figure out the structure of a story. It”s why you can watch Rear Window without the sound and still perfectly understand what it”s all about.
