Hollands licht (Dutch Light)
Pieter-Rim de Kroon / NL, 2003 / 95 min.
Is the famous ‘Dutch light’ really different from light elsewhere in the world? What’s true, and what’s a myth? Hollands licht is both an ode to the light in Dutch painting and a visually surprising viewing experience.

The myth of Dutch light is centuries old, but has never before been seriously investigated. The myth says that the light in Holland – as made famous in many paintings – is something really special. But, according to German artist Joseph Beuys, the Dutch light lost its luminosity half way through the twentieth century. In his opinion, this put an end to a centuries-old visual tradition.
