Hommage aan Eberhard van der Laan: Amsterdam, lieve stad

‘I hope it’ll stay the lovable city it is’, these were Eberhard van der Laan’s parting words about Amsterdam at the end of VPRO’s widely-viewed interview programme Zomergasten (Summer Guests). The death of Amsterdam’s beloved mayor leaves almost nobody untouched, and EYE joins in with a tribute to van der Laan that includes Johan van der Keuken’s Beppie, a disarming portrait of an Amsterdam street urchin, and some of the oldest footage of Amsterdam to have been preserved.
