Horse Money

Pedro Costa / PT, 2014 / 103 min.

The ninth feature from director Pedro Costa is an epic journey in chiaroscuro tracing the memories of an immigrant from Cape Verde to Lisbon, which was awarded the Golden Leopard for Best Director at the 2014 Locarno Film Festival. A poignant story of a community made invisible to those around them.

Ventura’s hands are possessed with a permanent tremor- a side-effect from the medication he has been taking for over 30 years to treat what has been diagnosed as schizophrenia. This once incredibly strong mason, who came to Lisbon from the Cape Verde islands at the age of nineteen, is a shadow of his former, proud self. His memory is also becoming confused, a doctor ascertains.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Pedro Costa in attendance, moderated by Bianca Lucas.
