CZ, 2018 / 98 min.
Jan Švankmajer incorporates classic Czech literature in his ‘extension’ of a play by the Čapek brothers. A group of actors rehearses the play ‘The Life Of Insects’. During the rehearsal, the private lives of the actors merge with the destiny of the play's characters.

Švankmajer: 'The Čapek brothers' play "The Insect Play" is a misanthropic play. My screenplay only extends this misanthropy, as man is more like an insect and this civilization is more like an anthill. One should also remember the message behind Kafka's "The Metamorphosis".'

Steaks, pebbles, iron locks: master animator Jan Švankmajer (Prague, 1934) can bring anything to life. His films are filled with obsession, lust, horror and eroticism, all underpinned by an undercurrent of abuse of power. Eye Filmmuseum presents the exhibition Jan Švankmajer - The Alchemical Wedding devoted to the work of Czech surrealist and master animator.
