Un chant d”amour Jean Genet (FR 1950) no dialogue

Un chant d'amour by cult writer, thief and “godfather of queer cinema” Jean Genet created a national scandal. This story by Genet, who wrote many of his works in prison, centres around two prison inmates who lose themselves in homo-erotic fantasies. With live accompaniment by Oscar Jan Hoogland (piano) and Yvo Sprey (voice and guitar).

Querelle Rainer Werner Fassbinder (BRD/FR/IT 1982) 108”; English spoken, Dutch subtitles.

Fassbinder”s swan song Querelle was based on Jean Genet”s 1953 homo-erotic novel Querelle de Brest. The film caused an outrage because of its frank portrayal of a fatal love affair between two men, the criminal sailor Querelle (Brad Davis) and Nono (Franco Nero). The two men meet in the gambling den/brothel run by Nono”s wife Madame Lysiane (Jeanne Moreau) in Brest. As she sings her favourite song “Each man kills the thing he loves”, Querelle becomes involved in a sadomasochistic game with met Nono.

The openly bisexual Fassbinder said Querelle aimed at creating understanding for the many faces of love: gay, bisexual, sadistic, masochistic or otherwise. “Only those who are free of fear can love without judging; the highest objective of all human endeavour is to truly live your life.”
