Jheronimus Bosch, Touched by the Devil
Pieter van Huystee / NL, 2016
In 2016 The Noordbrabants Museum in ’s-Hertogenbosch, home town of the enigmatic painter Jheronimus Bosch, will mount a major exhibition to commemorate the fifth centenary of his death. The film follows the team of Bosch specialists that set out to unravel the mystery of all 25 still existing paintings by Bosch on behalf of the exhibition.

The team travelled around the world for four years, visiting museums such as the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Musée du Louvre to investigate the paintings in detail, using X-ray photography and infrared techniques. For the first time in history, we have the chance to penetrate to the lowest paint layers to form an idea of the creative process of this “devil”s painter”, as he came to be known. The research team also examined whether all paintings were actually made by him. What makes a Bosch a genuine Bosch? What will be the findings of the research team?
