Jubilee

Derek Jarman / GB, 1978

Jubilee is a cult classic made by Derek Jarman with a great line-up of punk rockers, including Adam Ant, The Slits and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The title alludes to Queen Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee in 1977, an event which Jarman fused with the story of Queen Elizabeth I. An alchemist proposes to Her Royal Majesty to undertake a journey to the future, which propels the Virgin Queen into the anarchic London of the 1970s, where punk reigns supreme. Whatever happened to the Glorious Nation of yore?

FURY! Punk Culture

The year is 1976, the second industrial era is screeching to a conclusion and the oil crisis is at an all-time low when an undeniable counter-voice is heard in the dilapidated inner cities of London, Amsterdam and New York. A call for rebellion against the capitalist thinking that fills the pockets of the wealthy minority. It's a provocative cry from teens and young adults who no longer want to do what parents, teachers and politicians expect of them.
