Kinetta
Giorgos Lanthimos / GR, 2005
To mark the premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster, EYE brings you a menu with earlier films by the Greek filmmaker, including Kinetta, Lanthimos’ feature film debut. In this alienating portrait, three people in a deserted holiday resort break the tedium by re-enacting local murders. The film was screened at the Berlin and Toronto festivals.

A chambermaid, an assistant in a photo lab and a former police officer share an unusual passion: re-enacting and recording grisly murders that were to have been committed in Kinetta, a holiday resort long past its prime. The roles they assume appear to take over their personal lives – or perhaps they serve as an extension, the filmmaker doesn”t draw any conclusions.
Kinetta can be regarded as a comment on our longing to escape from our mundane lives; Lanthimos has a subtly absurd way of showing it”s an urge that is not without danger.
