About Eye

Kira Muratova’s second feature film is a freely meandering portrait of a love triangle with Muratovain in the lead role. Object of desire is the attractive geologist Maxim, played by singer/underground hero Vladimir Visotski. The film, shot in Odesa, was almost instantaneously banned by the Soviet censors.

Maxim, a free-spirited intellectual who criss-crosses the Soviet Union as a geologist, has two lovers. There is Valentina in town, with a successful career in the Soviet bureaucracy, and in one of the villages Maxim visits, there is Nadja, a beautiful, young, somewhat naive country girl.

Brief Encounters

The visually overwhelming and strongly symbolical A Spring for the Thirsty paints the cycle of birth, life and death and is full of references to Ukraine folk culture.

Yuri Ilyenko, cameraman of Parajanov’s Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964), debuted with a film that was at least as controversial as that of his mentor. The film centres on an old man living on his own on the edge of a desert. His family have moved elsewhere, leaving him behind with his visions and memories, which are evoked through powerful documentary imagery. A Spring for the Thirsty is reminiscent of the poetic films by the Ukraine film pioneer Alexander Dovzhenko, who was also a major influence on the work of Paradzhanov and Tarkovsky. The film was made in the aftermath of the Thaw, but was never released to film theatres. It was one of the major discoveries when the film vaults of the Soviet Union were finally opened at the end of the 1980s.

In this wryly funny, absurdist road trip, an interpreter gets stuck in southern Ukraine where he discovers an anarchist parallel universe. Roman Bondarchuk is a new voice in Ukrainian cinema and this surreal story is his feature film debut.

Interpreter Lukas gets stuck during an inspection of a military checkpoint slightly north of the Crimea during. The lost city boy finds shelter at the home of the colourful Vova. He guides him through a world that outstrips his imagination, a universe in which life seems entirely divorced from any recognisable structure. He becomes fascinated by his host and the latter’s daughter Marushka, who he falls in love with after which Lukas' initial contempt for rural life, makes way for happiness he never knew could exist.

July 2014. Expectant parents Irka and Tolik live in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, close to the Russian border; contested lands since the start of the war in the Donbas. The ominous tension reaches its apogee in their village when Flight MH17 is shot down nearby.

Kira Muratova, Yuri Ilyenko, Alexander Dovzhenko and Maryna Er Gorbach – just a few of the directors featured in Kino Ukraïna. Names that cover the period from the 1930s and ’60s to now; from the Soviet era up to the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces.

Kino Ukraïna

Beforehand: Doma kak doma (Home is Home) by Eefje Suijkerbuijk (NL 2020). A short poetic documentary that shows ten cinematographic tableaux vivants of Ukrainians in places that are dear to them.

Introductory talk with Robbie Schweiger, art historian, slavist and researcher at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Ukrainian artist Nikolay Karabinovych from Odessa who lives and works in Brussels and Kyiv. His media are video, sound, texts and performance.
