Kneecap
Rich Peppiat / IE, 2024 / 105 min.
Irish rappers Kneecap play themselves, crude and anarchic, in this abrasive, uproarious biopic full of sex, drugs and hip hop, revealing the countless controversies surrounding the group and their many antics. With Michael Fassbender as a charismatic father figure and former member of the IRA.
Music teacher JJ winds up by chance in post-Troubles Belfast in a circle including self-proclaimed 'scum' Naoise and Liam Óg – the three of them form improbable, rebellious rap trio Kneecap. The soft-spoken teacher quickly transforms into a foul-mouthed DJ. Kneecap rail in Irish against the established order and become the unexpected figureheads of a civil rights movement aimed at saving their native Irish language. In the meantime, the audacious, anarchic trio have to deal with the police, paramilitaries and politicians, all of whom want to shut them up. Eventually, however, it is family and relationship issues that threaten to pull the plug on their loudspeakers.
