Koolhoven & Simons: Trucker Night
Martin Koolhoven and Ronald Simons are back to guide you through the land of the genre film. On the cutting table tonight: the trucker film. The spotlight’s on The Wages of Fear, Henri-Georges Clouzot’s explosive masterpiece. Yves Montand is the cool adventurer navigating a dynamite-laden truck through the jungle. Kaboom! Or not?
VPRO presenter Martin Koolhoven and Eye programmer Ronald Simons consider the finer points of a nowadays rather neglected genre: the trucker film. Which conditions must be met before a film can be awarded this label?
Koolhoven and Simons will catch you up on the trucker film showing clips and trailers from this cast iron genre. Think Harley Cokeliss”s Battletruck (1982), Sam Peckinpah”s Convoy (1978), George Miller”s Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) or Hands of Steel (1986) by Sergio Martino. A tribute to the lone trucker, the existential cowboy gripping the lonely wheel.
After the break it”s time for the nerve-shredding main feature:
Le Salaire de la peur (Henri George Clouzot, FR 1953, 131')
Four desperados are stuck in a village in Central America. Come hell or high water, they”re determined to break free…So they consent to drive two trucks filled with nitroglycerin to a remote oil field. The road is bad beyond belief, the smallest shock will send them sky-high…
Double-clutching Mario (Yves Montand) keeps his cool in the cabin of a truck about to explode. This full-blooded trucker drama won both the Palme d”Or at Cannes and the Golden Bear at Berlin.
Screened in 4K, with thanks to the Institut français des Pays Bas.

Koolhoven & Simons
Every month, Koolhoven and Simons will be scrutinizing the genre film, presenting films within pretty forthright themes that have never before been screened at Eye. Expect evenings on Trucker, Grindhouse or Revenge of Nature films. A tribute to rarely screened trailers and forgotten classics, where possible in 35mm, using films from Eye’s collection.
