La dentellière
Claude Goretta / CH, FR, DE, 1977 / 107 min.
Isabelle Huppert was 22 when she broke through with her role in Claude Goretta’s portrait of a young hairdresser who is seduced and subsequently dumped. Her subtle, taciturn acting meant she would grow to become one of Europe’s most acclaimed actresses.

It seems an almost banal starting point: the failed romance between an intellectual and a poorly educated working class girl, based on a Pascal Laine novel, yet Swiss director Claude Goretta has turned out a nuanced character study featuring very involved camerawork.
