La double vie de Véronique
Krzysztof Kieslowski / FR, PL, 1991 / 98 min.
Kieslowski’s breakthrough with international cinema audiences came with La double vie de Véronique. Irène Jacob plays the singer Weronika who has a French double, Véronique, with the same heart problems. One of them dies, the other receives a mysterious cassette tape.

This year, distributor Cherry Pickers will release four digitally (4K) restored films by Krzysztof Kieslowski (1941 - 1996) (4K): La double vie de Véronique (1991) and the Trois couleurs trilogy (1993/1994) inspired by the colours of the French flag.
La double vie de Véronique was the first film the major Polish director made after the fall of the Berlin War. It was also the first Kieslowski film to star French actress Irène Jacob (Trois couleurs: Rouge, Al di là delle nuvole by Michelangelo Antonioni) in an impressive double role.
Jacob plays both Weronika and Véronique. One lives in Cracow, the other in Paris. Both are (classical) vocalists with great futures ahead of them, both have the same heart condition. Weronika dies during a performance, which affects Véronique: she stops singing and receives a cassette tape from a mysterious stranger.
