La notte
Michelangelo Antonioni / IT, FR, 1960 / 122 min.
Stylised drama about spiritual emptiness in the post-war period. Marcello Mastroianni plays Milanese writer Giovanni, suffering from writer’s block, Jeanne Moreau his alienated wife Lidia and Monica Vitti the bored flirt.

In La notte, the attractively presented life of the Milanese elite – living in gleaming modern flats, men and women alike in bespoke suits, driving around the brand new orbital roads in sports cars – is deceptive; behind the façade of good taste, clinking ice cubes in the Campari and polite, cultivated conversation, lurks tedium.
