Le bonheur

Agnès Varda / FR, 1965 / 80 min.

François, a happily married joiner, falls for a young woman. Oddly enough, the affair only strengthens his feelings for his wife and child. How to break the news, though? An ironic take on the virtues of family life shot in pastels and interspersed with music by Mozart.

Although happily married to the kind Thérèse (Claire Drouot) a seamstress, young father François (Jean-Claude Drouot) starts an affair with a post office employee. He hopes this will make him and his little family even happier, but his deeds unavoidably exact their toll.

Le bonheur is one of Agnès Varda's most provocative films. Deceptively jolly in tone, the film examines the concepts of loyalty and happiness in a modern, egocentric world.
