Legend of the Mountain
Hu King / TW, CN, 1979 / 191 min.
A young scholar gets lost in the spirit world in this action film by King Hu. The brand new 4K restoration premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2016.

In this stunning visual feat, a young scholar travels to a remote town where strange events and people await him – beginning with the beautiful and enigmatic lady Melody. He marries her without knowing that she is actually an evil spirit who tries to manipulate him in devious ways. The young scholar is drawn more and more into the battle between exorcists and demons. King Hu based himself on a tale from the Song dynasty. Legend of the Mountain was shot in South Korea, at the same time as Raining in the Mountain, another masterpiece by Hu from 1979. The cast and crew of the two films are almost identical, both films highlight Hu”s masterful control of the action genre and his remarkable philosophical insights. The film won four Golden Horse Awards.
Introduction in English on June 7th by Maggie Lee (Cinemasia, Variety, Tokyo International Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival).
