Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese: “Resistance is part of the process”
In the specials made for the exhibition Vive le cinéma!, guests and makers involved in the exhibition explore their cinematic oeuvre. Based on his short films, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese talks about the role of space, landscape and location in his work.

With his films Mother I am Suffocating. This Is my Last Film About You (2018) and This Is Not a Burial, It's a Resurrection (2019), Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese (Lesotho, 1980) has proved himself to be one of the most dynamic and original voices in the contemporary film landscape. In terms of form, style and theme, his films balance between the personal and the universal, connecting as they do the post-colonial landscape to earlier oral narrative traditions. In doing so , Mosese is also consistently looking for adventurous forms and visual combinations.
He once told Senses of Cinema that resistance was a key impetus behind his artistic practice. Resistance against the disappearance of traditional communities as a result of gentrification, for instance, but also a more philosophical protest against the inexorability of time's arrow or the cycles of life. Then there is also an artistic form of resistance, engendering creativity and inspiration just as the breaks and ruptures become manifest in his artistic practice.
Based on his short films and clips from his longer work, Mosese talks to Jan Pieter Ekker and Dana Linssen about the role of space, landscape and location in his work.
