Luci del varietà
Federico Fellini, Alberto Lattuada / IT, 1950 / 98 min.
Fellini had already written the scripts for three films by Alberto Lattuada; now the Milanese director let him direct the actors: Fellini directs Giulietta Masina and Carla del Poggio in this bittersweet story – with comic overtones – about the life of a travelling troupe of Italian variety artistes.

It might seem difficult to believe, but without Alberto Lattuada (1914-2005), Federico Fellini may never have become a director. It was Lattuada – subject of a retrospective at the Cannes film festival this year – who encouraged Fellini to jump into the co-director’s chair. Fellini himself says he would never have thought of this, as he was so successful as a screenwriter.
