M – eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder

Fritz Lang / DEUZE, 1931 / 108 min.

This expressionist classic is Fritz Lang’s first talkie, and a forerunner of film noir. M tells the spine-chilling story of psychopathic child murderer Hans Beckert (Peter Lorre). Restored version, screening on 35mm.

Fritz Lang blazed the trail for film noir with his first talkie: the expressionist classic M contains all the visual and thematic elements we’ve come to associate with film noir, and was also pioneering in its use of sound. Time after time murderer Beckert manages to stay out of the hands of the law as he roams a dark urban landscape. Eventually he falls into the hands of the professional underworld, whose ‘businesses’ are being disrupted by the increased police presence on the streets.
