Madadayo
Akira Kurosawa, Ishirô Honda / JP, 1993 / 134 min.
Kurosawa’s last film is a slightly melancholy, but also humorous portrait of a Japanese professor preparing for his impending farewell as a teacher at a military academy. Kurosawa portrays the relationship between the prof and his former students in a sequence of vignettes.

“Madadayo” (“not yet”) is the reply professor Hyakken Uchida gives to the question from his former students about whether he is “ready”. Ready to say goodbye – to his academic work, interests, wife and cat and, ultimately, to life itself. That’s still a long way off, the professor assures the group of men who meet each year at Uchida’s home to celebrate this birthday. He then drinks a large glass of beer.
The film is presented in German and English subtitles.
