The sailor Martin Eden saves Arturo, the youngest son of a wealthy family, from a dire situation. He takes him to his house where he meets Elena, Arturo's sister. He instantly falls in love.
The young, attractive and sophisticated woman is also a symbol of the social status he strives for. Martin's dream is to become a writer despite his humble origins and many obstacles. However, through the older intellectual Russ Brissenden, he ends up in socialist circles, as a result of which he comes into conflict with Elena and the bourgeois world.
