Pedro Almodóvar / ES, 1986 / 110 min.
Pedro Almodóvar and his regular crew of actors regularly created a sensation with outspoken films that exposed and explored the underground scene of Madrid. Sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll in a humorous guise, with plenty of nods to Spanish machismo as often embodied by Antonio Bandéras in the lead role.
To accompany the premiere of Dolor y gloria, Almodóvar”s latest film, a young Banderas stars as the would-be bullfighter Ángel who gets entangled in a dark comedy centring around masculinity, women, bulls and the Spanish passion for lust and death.
Dolor y gloria features the screening of the restored fictitious film Sabor in the Cinematheque in Madrid as a tongue-in-cheek reference to Matador. Eye screens Matador to mark the premiere of Almodóvar”s latest film.
