Medea
Pier Paolo Pasolini / IT, FR, DE, 1969 / 110 min.
Pasolini’s brilliant adaptation of Greek myth. Medea the sorceress was seduced, then abandoned by the hero Jason. Opera star Maria Callas plays the imposing title role in her sole big screen appearance.

Screening to commemorate Pasolini’s 100th birthday. In almost dialogue-free scenes, Pasolini conjures up the primeval realm of magic and self-sacrifice which the naïve, love-struck Medea leaves to follow the hero Jason. She helped him acquire the Golden Fleece and only after some time realises she has been used for his worldly ambitions in a cold, calculating environment of political power struggles.
