Alexandru Belc, a former assistant to ‘Romanian Wave’ directors Corneliu Poromboiu and Cristian Mungiu, make what repression means in a dictatorship palpable. In 1972, 17-year-old Ana and her friends listen to Radio Free Europe and pay for it.
Bucharest, 1972. Secondary school pupil Ana is approaching her final exams when she hears that her boyfriend and his family have been granted permission to emigrate to Germany. Shortly afterwards, she and her friends listen to Metronom, a programme on the illegal Radio Free Europe at a party. Then the Securitate, Ceauşescu’s secret police raid the apartment.
Prior to Metronom you will see the short animated film Tom Poes in Dreamland (3') by Henk Kabos. This is a 1949 cinema advertising film for radio sets starring Heer Ollie B. Bommel and Tom Poes, the well-known characters from the books by Marten Toonder.
