Museumnacht 2025

During Museumnacht (19:00 - 02:00), Eye Filmmuseum is open to everyone in possession of a ticket or wristband for Museumnacht Amsterdam 2025. The building is closed for regular visitors during that time.

MNACHT25 POSTER A0 02
Come and immerse yourself in film and music during Museumnacht Amsterdam. Visit the temporary exhibition Tilda Swinton – Ongoing or see the most beautiful cinema equipment in the permanent exhibition What is film?, make your own sound effects, mosaic film or flipbook, go wild with Soundtrack Karaoke and dance until you drop.

During the night of November 1 to 2, between All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, the veil between life and the hereafter is at its thinnest. The spirits of the past whisper in the shadows of the present. In the dead of night, memories come to life, and darkness transforms into a mystical and enchanting play of shadows. Let yourself be carried away into a world of light, shadow, and illusion, where saints and sinners wander side by side.

Programme

  • Tilda Swinton – Ongoing

    19:00 - 23:00 | temporary exhibition

This autumn, Eye presents Tilda Swinton – Ongoing, an exclusive exhibition dedicated to the celebrated Scottish performer, artist, and fashion icon. This unique and personal exhibition centres on Swinton’s creative collaborations. She showcases new and existing work by eight artistic partners and close friends: Pedro Almodóvar, Luca Guadagnino, Joanna Hogg, Derek Jarman, Jim Jarmusch, Olivier Saillard, Tim Walker and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Talk to one of our guides and discover more on a guided tour, or wander around the exhibition space yourself.

  • What is film?

    19:00 - 23:00 | permanent exhibition

On the ground floor and spread throughout Eye, various components shed light on the world of moving images. Get to know the development of film, from the past to the present. Browse through Eye's unique collection. Learn how the earliest cameras work. Enjoy the most beautiful fragments. New is the animation gallery, where you can experience animation up close and learn more about the creative processes behind making animated films.

  • Create your own flipbook

    19:00 - 23:00 | permanent exhibition

Have you seen the TikTok-trend? In the permanent exhibition 'What is film?' on the ground floor of Eye Filmmuseum you can make your own flipbook. Press start, make a fun move and have your mini film immortalized in the Flipbook Corner on the ground floor for €8,50.

  • Soundtrack karaoke

    21:00 - 23:00 | cinema 2

After last year's success story, karaoke collective KINNFOLK will once again transform one of our cinema's into a karaoke club with a special focus on film music. Some films have produced the biggest hits, such as Saturday Night Fever, Ghostbusters, Space Jam or Titanic. And some films have given existing songs a new life through their perfect timing. Think of Trainspotting or the films of Quentin Tarantino. Which one will you choose?

  • Workshop: create your own mosaic film

    19:00, 19:35, 20:10, 20:45, 21:20 | foyer

Create your own animation film using mosaic stones, light, colour and stop-motion. Build luminous patterns, create pixelated figures and bring them to life with animation.

  • Workshop: foley (create your own sound effects)

    19:00, 19:45, 20:30, 21:15 | cinema 4

What does fire sound like? What do you hear when a slide loops? Become a foley artist and use the strangest objects to create sound effects for a scene from The Skeleton Dance, a short animation by Walt Disney from 1929.

  • Live performance: LudoWic

    20:30 and 21:30 | cinema 1

The Trautonium is one of the first synthesizers, invented in Berlin in 1929. The instrument sounds both nostalgic and futuristic and was, for example, used in the score of Hitchcock's The Birds. LudoWic is one of the few persons in the world who still owns and can play this forgotten instrument. While archive footage is shown on the cinema screen, his music – created especially for this evening in Eye – tells a story that both cherishes the past and imagines the future. Join us on a journey where what we already know and what we have yet to discover converge.

  • Rave Till The Grave

    19:30 - 01:00 | cinema 3

Rave in your cinema seat to the aesthetics of ghostly illusion, dreamlike hallucination, and the merging of reality and nightmare. Immerse yourself for ten minutes in a world of phenomena that float between real and unreal, dream and reality, life and death. Enter a state of hallucinatory attention, just like those 18th-century magic lantern shows: shadows that are simultaneously real and unreal.

Just before midnight, there will be a screening of VHS short Nachtvlinder: The Deadly Act of Survival by Colin Oord & Katalin Fikkert, about a young frontman of a pop-punk band forced to repay his debts during a seemingly endless night. The screening will be followed by a performance with Hamish Ford and Leo Mokkala from performance duo CROCODILIA, who both collaborated with the film.

  • Street food

    19:00 - 00:00 | restaurant

Eye Bar & Restaurant serves delicious night snacks to keep you going.

  • DJ collective CPT + VJ Errol Tyson

    22:00 - 02:00 | arena

CPT (Coloured People Time) is an authentic, raw, and forward-thinking collective founded by Amsterdammers of colour, striving for equality in the electronic music scene. Unity on the dance floor, for everyone, regardless of age, gender identity, or cultural background!

Errol Tyson, better known as Ezhi, is an audiovisual artist who manipulates cinematic material and natural textures to create new worlds. During Museumnacht, he will perform a live interpretation of archival material from Eye. Errol conducts research at the University of Amsterdam on the role of AI in redefining audiovisual collections.
