My Shyness Notwithstanding: Wes Anderson and Tilda Swinton in Conversation
Wes Anderson engages in an extensive conversation with Tilda Swinton about their collaboration and sources of inspiration, using excerpts from their joint work: The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch, Asteroid City, Isle of Dogs, and Moonrise Kingdom.

Tilda Swinton described her acting in the five films she made with Wes Anderson as ‘baroque play’. In this Conversation, they talk at length about their collaboration and sources of inspiration and watch excerpts from the films they made together. They also exchange ideas about the future of the exhibition Tilda Swinton – Ongoing, which will travel to other cities after Eye and continue to change and grow, reflecting the very essence of the exhibition: ‘Ongoing’.
Whether she plays a leading or supporting role, or just lends her voice (in Isle of Dogs), Swinton is always perfectly cast in Wes Anderson's films. In The Grand Budapest Hotel, she plays a memorable supporting role as Madame D., the murdered, wealthy 80-year-old mistress of the concierge of the Grand Budapest Hotel, after which her bequeathed Renaissance masterpiece ‘Boy with Apple’ turns out to be missing.
Swinton plays writer J.K.L. Berensen (who gives a rather unfortunate PowerPoint presentation) in Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch, a tongue-in-cheek homage to the departing editorial staff of an American weekly magazine in a fictional French city.
In Asteroid City, she plays Dr. Hickenlooper. This science fiction film and romantic tragicomedy follows the spectacular events during an annual Junior Stargazer convention in 1955 in pastel tones.
In Moonrise Kingdom, Swinton plays the formidable Social Services, who memorably swoops in in an impressive cloak to read the riot act to Edward Norton and Bruce Willis.
On the same day as this Conversation, Asteroid City, The French Dispatch, and Moonrise Kingdom will also be screened at Eye.
Unfortunately, demand for tickets exceeded availability and this Conversation is now sold out. For those unable to attend in person, all Conversations are recorded and can be watched back for free on the Eye Film Player after the event. Conversations that took place earlier are already available there.
