Americans succeeded in writing history for themselves in only two centuries. Architecture and cinema occupy pride of place in this development. The huge cinemas at which America screens it major and smaller productions sometimes have trouble staying in business. Spectacular, somewhat pretentious, they dominate main street in every town. Nevertheless, they still often struggle to survive. The Byrd in Richmond, Virginia being one of the finest examples of this.
